Share Files Between Windows and Android Devices: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sharing files between Windows and Android devices has been a challenge for years. However, Google and Microsoft have finally found a solution with the Nearby Share protocol. Originally launched for Android devices in 2020, Nearby Share is now available for Windows PCs through a beta version. This guide will walk you through the process of installing and using Nearby Share to wirelessly transfer files between your devices.

Install Nearby Share on Windows

  1. Visit the official Android Nearby Share page and click on the “Get Started” button to download the Windows app.
  2. Install the app on your Windows PC, launch it, and sign in using your Google account.
  3. On the setup screen, provide a name for your PC and click the “Receiving” box. By default, it’s set to “No One.”
  4. Use the drop-down menu to select “Your Devices,” which limits the app to devices connected to your Google account. Alternatively, you can choose to limit it to your contacts or make it accessible to everyone.
  5. Click “Done” to complete the setup.

Before transferring files, ensure that Nearby Share is enabled on your Android device. Rather than being an OS feature, Nearby Share is a part of the Google Files app. If you don’t have Google Files installed, download it from the Play Store. Open the app, tap the menu button, navigate to Settings > Nearby Share, and enable the “Use Nearby Share” option.
