In 2011, Apple introduced Siri, a personal virtual assistant, along with the launch of the iPhone 4S. Since then, Apple has been continuously improving Siri by adding several new features and capabilities. Now, Siri is available across various Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and the Apple Watch.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is considered to be miles ahead of its competitors in terms of personal AI, especially generative AI. This has made brands like Apple and Google go back to the drawing board to reinvent their AI services. Reports suggest that Apple is working on adding natural language generation capability to Siri. An AI service with natural language generation can create human-like content. Currently, Apple is testing a more capable Siri on Apple TVs running on tvOS 16.4 beta. It is trained to generate jokes and nothing else. However, Siri with natural language generation is expected to be available on devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs in the coming days.
Depending on the device, Apple may limit the capabilities of Siri to deliver a seamless experience. Unlike ChatGPT or GPT-4, which can generate textual content, Apple’s improved Siri will offer improved speech output. It is said to sound more “human” than ever. It is also speculated that Apple may limit this capability to Siri, and it might not be as capable as OpenAI’s GPT-4. There is currently no update from Apple regarding the rollout of this feature. However, it is likely that Apple will showcase the improved Siri at its upcoming WWDC 2023 developers conference.
